Rise & Shine: Finding What Energizes You
Hi there 👋,
Have you ever ended a day feeling completely drained and wondering why? Or maybe you’ve had those rare days when you feel unstoppable, energized, and at your best? Learning what fuels you versus what depletes you is a game-changer—not just for your productivity but for your overall happiness and well-being.
In her book Dynamic Drive, Molly Fletcher talks about the importance of understanding your energy dynamics: the activities, tasks, and people that energize you versus those that drain you. It’s a concept that changed how I approach both my personal and professional life, and today I’m sharing how you can apply it to yours.
Start With Awareness
The first step to finding what energizes you is awareness. Pay attention to your day-to-day activities and ask yourself:
What lights me up?
What leaves me feeling depleted?
What tasks do I look forward to, and which do I procrastinate on?
Once you identify these patterns, you can make intentional changes to balance your energy more effectively.
My Journey to Balance
Personally
Grocery shopping is one of those things that drains me. 🍉 Plus with two kids in all the activities, when is there time?! The thought of this completely zaps my energy. So, I outsourced it. Now, I have my groceries delivered, and I use that saved time and energy to do something that brings me joy—like going for a walk, reading, or spending time with family.
Professionally
In my career, back-to-back meetings used to leave me utterly exhausted. I found myself showing up to each meeting feeling less effective than the last, unable to focus or contribute meaningfully. I realized I needed to protect my energy to show up as my best self.
So, I started scheduling Focus Blocks on my calendar—uninterrupted time for deep work. During these blocks, I’d tackle important tasks without distractions, which allowed me to bring more clarity, creativity, and confidence into the meetings I did attend. This simple adjustment transformed not only my productivity but also how I felt at the end of the day.
Your Energy Audit
To find your balance, start by conducting an energy audit. Here’s how:
1️⃣ Make two lists: One for what energizes you and one for what drains you.
2️⃣ Look for patterns: Are there tasks, people, or situations that consistently show up in either column?
3️⃣ Take action: Ask yourself how you can adjust. What can you eliminate, delegate, or schedule differently to protect your energy?
For example:
If an overflowing inbox drains you, set specific times to check and respond to emails.
If brainstorming sessions energize you, seek opportunities to collaborate on creative projects.
If networking feels like a chore, consider virtual options or smaller groups that align with your comfort zone.
The Payoff of Prioritizing Energy
When you prioritize the things that energize you and manage the things that drain you, you’ll find yourself: ✨ More focused and productive, ✨ More fulfilled in your work, and ✨ Better equipped to show up for the people and activities that matter most to you.
Remember, finding balance doesn’t mean avoiding hard things. It’s about creating space to recharge so you can handle challenges with clarity and resilience.
